All surgery presents risk, including da Vinci Surgery. Serious complications may occur, up to and including death. Examples of serious and life-threatening complications that may require hospitalization include damage to tissues or organs; bleeding; infection; and internal scarring that causes long-lasting pain or blockages. Temporary pain or nerve injury has been linked to the inverted position often used during abdominal and pelvic surgery. Patients should consider that risks of surgery include potential for human error, for equipment failure and the possibility that their surgeon could convert their minimally invasive procedure to an open approach. A conversion could mean a longer operative time and time under anesthesia. Efforts to provide a minimally invasive surgery could also result in a longer operative time and time under anesthesia. Results, including cosmetic results, may vary. Patients who bleed easily, have abnormal blood clotting, are pregnant or morbidly obese may not be candidates for da Vinci Surgery. Other surgical approaches are available. Patients should review the risks associated with all surgical approaches.
